In October, 26th 2006 the City Council of Vicenza approves the project of a new military base in Vicenza and thousands of citizens occupy Piazza dei Signori armed with pans and lids, making noise and protesting against it.
Soon after, in January 2007, President Prodi -from Bucarest- confirms that decision and intends to put an end to the Dal Molin question.
But the protest in Vicenza is overwhelming and thousands of citizens are back in the streets to say “NO”! They occupy the Railways Station and they shout their strong disappointment and disapproval.
It is on January, 16th 2007 that the NO DAL MOLIN movement sets up an encampment on the edge of the site of Dal Molin and calls it PRESIDIO PERMANENTE: it has operated 7 days a week, 24 hours a day ever since.
The No Dal Molin movement led ordinary people of all ages and from across political, social and cultural boundaries to mobilize in opposition to the project of a new USA military base in Vicenza.
Citizens have embarked on lobbying trips to Rome to speak with Italian government, to Brussels to speak with European Parliament members (September 2008) and three times to Washington DC ( May, 2007 and March and April 2009).
The mobilization has continued for close 3 years now and the citizens are determined to defend their city and territory. There has been an endless succession of non-violent protests and demonstrations, bringing as many as 150.000 people to the streets.
In May, 10th 2009, the determination to defend their own rights and to defend the future of Vicenza led the people of the Presidio to buy the land on which it is built.
The message we want to send is clear and unquestionable.
Nobody is allowed to stamp on people’s rights, nobody is allowed to ignore people’s protests, nobody is allowed to bypass people’s requests, nobody is allowed to destroy the environment.
The Presidio Permanente is there to remind everybody that it is possible to say “NO!” and that it is possible to face openly those who try to forget that democracy, peace and environment must be protected and defended.
